چکیده
Purpose: This study compared the clinical parameters and histological findings according to benzalkonium chloride concentration (BAC; 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%) for inducing experimental dry eye (EDE) in a rabbit model. Methods: Rabbits were divided into four groups BAC concentration: untreated group, 0.2% BAC. was instilled topically both eyes of rabbits twice daily until they euthanized after 14 days. Tear volume, tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining score (CFS) measured 0, 3, 5, 7, days treatment. After excising tissues on day 14, conjunctival goblet cell density epithelial apoptosis quantified. Results: The volume TBUT lower CFS higher than baseline values 10, 5 0.05, 0.1, groups, respectively (all p < 0.05). At days, group showed more significant aggravation all parameters, 0.1% had 0.05) 0.05% group. In significantly 0.01). Between-group differences observed 0.01).Conclusions: Instilling induced EDE groups. Although cannot be used severe model, it is useful model short time.

A rabbit dry eye model induced by topical medication of a preservative benzalkonium chloride.
PURPOSE To establish a rabbit dry eye model with topical medication of the ocular preparation preservative benzalkonium chloride (BAC). METHODS Sixteen white rabbits were used. One eye of each rabbit was chosen randomly for topical administration of 0.1% BAC twice daily for 14 days. The other untreated eyes served as controls. Schirmer test, fluorescein, and rose bengal staining were performe...
متن کاملTherapeutic effects of epidermal growth factor on benzalkonium chloride-induced dry eye in a mouse model.
PURPOSE To investigate the therapeutic effects and possible mechanisms of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the mouse dry eye model induced by benzalkonium chloride (BAC). METHODS The eye drop containing EGF was topically administered (3 ng per day) on a BAC-induced dry eye model. The following clinical indications of dry eye were evaluated on Days 2, 4, and 6: tear break-up time (BUT), cornea...
متن کاملResearch on the Stability of a Rabbit Dry Eye Model Induced by Topical Application of the Preservative Benzalkonium Chloride
BACKGROUND Dry eye is a common disease worldwide, and animal models are critical for the study of it. At present, there is no research about the stability of the extant animal models, which may have negative implications for previous dry eye studies. In this study, we observed the stability of a rabbit dry eye model induced by the topical benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and determined the valid tim...
متن کاملA mouse dry eye model induced by topical administration of benzalkonium chloride
PURPOSE To develop a dry eye model of mouse induced by topical administration of benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and investigate the possible mechanisms. METHODS BAC at concentration of 0.2% was applied to the mouse ocular surface for 7 days. Phenol red thread tear test, tear break-up time (BUT) test, corneal inflammatory index scoring, fluorescein and rose bengal test were performed to evaluate ...

PURPOSE In this study, the beneficial effects of the oral administration of ethanol extract of Diospyros kaki (EEDK) were tested on a mouse dry eye model induced by benzalkonium chloride (BAC). METHODS A solution of 0.2% BAC was administered topically to mouse eyes for 14 days, twice daily, to induce dry eye. Various concentrations of EEDK were administrated daily by oral gavage for 14 days a...
